Child Therapy

Is it time to seek additional social, emotional or behavioral support for your child?

Is your child having trouble identifying and expressing their feelings clearly to you? Have you noticed the following changes in your child?

  •  Changes in behavior, mood, or emotional state

  • Academic challenges

  • Difficulty focusing

  • Increase in impulsive behaviors

  •  Behavioral and social difficulties

  • Increased expression of feelings of sadness, anxiety, anger or fear

Children, like adults, experience a broad spectrum of emotions, and their capacity for feeling is complex. They navigate a world where joy, curiosity, excitement, fear, sadness, and anger can all coexist within a single day. As children are still developing their emotional regulation skills, they might struggle to express or contain these powerful emotions effectively.

Common Emotional and Behavioral Concerns in Children:

As a parent, deciding whether your child may need therapy can feel overwhelming and challenging.  Children are remarkably diverse and unique individuals, each with their own set of experiences, emotions, and needs.

Children often convey their emotions through behavior and their actions become a powerful form of communication. When children feel overwhelmed they might throw tantrums, exhibit defiance, or regress to earlier stages of development, like thumb-sucking or bedwetting. Aggression or acting out can be their way of expressing frustration, anger, or fear. Some children may withdraw or become excessively clingy when facing anxiety or sadness. These behaviors serve as signals, a language through which they seek to convey their inner struggle, and it's crucial for adults to recognize that they're attempting to communicate their overwhelming emotions in the only way they know how.

Therapy Empowers Children

Children may seek therapy for a variety of reasons, and the benefits of early intervention are numerous. Therapy is helpful for children facing challenges like anxiety, depression, trauma, or behavioral issues, as it equips them with strategies to navigate these difficulties. Moreover, early intervention through therapy can prevent issues from escalating, ensuring that children have the tools to thrive in their present and future lives.

Children do not always have the necessary tools or vocabulary to explain what is happening. Through a combination of structured and unstructured play, children will:

  • Process their emotions independently

  • Expand their feelings vocabulary

  • Learn to regulate their emotions

  • Develop effective coping skills

  • Build resilience and flexibility

  • Socialize and connect with others

  • Increase self-esteem

  • Thrive and feel more comfortable and confident in themselves

Child clients can't wait to come to their sessions and find the therapeutic process fun and meaningful. Parents witness the positive impact of therapy as their children become more emotionally resilient, better equipped to navigate life's ups and downs, and more capable of expressing their thoughts and feelings constructively.
